Lesson Outline

  • Introduce the topic with clip on Alcohol and the Teenage Brain. 

  • Brainstorm what students know about alcohol

  • Walk students through attached ppt on alcohol

  • Print or send out the student work booklet on Google Classroom (link below)

  • Students can also use the Intro to alcohol information link to help with the above

  • Documentary on George Best, “Brought Up By Booze.”

Learning Outcome

  • What is smoking?

  • What are the short term and long term effects of smoking? 

  • What is tobacco versus marijuana?

  • What are its effects on the body?

 

Lesson Outline

  • Students are to find 10 chemicals found in a cigarette. For each chemical, where else can it be found.

  • Under the ‘Why Quit’ section of the Quit Now website, students go to ‘Damaging your body’. Once here, students need to choose three parts of the body and write down the effects of smoking for each section. (Teacher can choose to get students to read out their answers for each section of the body).

  • Under the ‘Why Quit’ section of the Quit Now website, click on Benefits of Quitting. Students are to write down what happens to their body at each of the time intervals (12 hours - 15 years). Once finished, as a class get different students to read out their answer for each time interval.

Work Task

  • Teacher led discussion about what the drugs are, the short and long term harms associated with using as well as looking at ways that you can say no and making smart choices. 

  • Watch each of the below clips showing the affects of various drugs on the body. 

  • Students are to click on the above link - "Illegal Drugs - Student Booklet"

  • Students are to open the book on their iPad and the teacher is to walk the students through the booklet.

  • While the teacher is going through the booklet, the student is to fill out the above worksheet.

  • Use the Drug Wheel link to help answer the questions. 

  • Now move on to the TedEd lesson on How drugs affect the brain.

  • Students can work through each section of the lesson on their devices.
